The Engineering Industry is one of the most fundamental industries in our world. As well it is probably the lighthouse industry regarding the future of our society and our planet. Probably because sustainability and humanity are not seen as a project only, but as a daily life substantial habit. Probably because the majority of companies provide high performing, worldclass products. Probably because differently to e.g. Automotive, the Engineering Industry is based on thousands of mid-sized companies, several of them family owned and global market leader, with MDs / CXOs targeting long term success – not only focusing on the financial results of the next 3 month.
Unfortunately, daily business as a MD / CXO in the Engineering Industry itself is often even more complex than in several other industries.
- Most companies are driven by an inspiring technology, which gets sold into several countries and industries, leading to a complex structure of applications, regions, and industries
- The comparably small average company size of 200 employees leads to several functions not being available inhouse in depth, like a Chief Strategy Officer incl. support functions for market research and analysis, a bunch of assistants and several other functions. This is surely very different to e.g. Automotive with its typical big players like VW with >200.000 employees, not only knowing but dominating and shaping the market. Therefore, it’s more on the MDs / CXOs plate and information gathering and decision making is often much more complex in the Engineering Industry.
- There is much more opportunity of interaction in the market between companies in Engineering, not a straight Supply Chain like in Automotive with its clear chain of suppliers Tier 1, Tier 2, …
- Well known and big Eco System partners try to target everyone in the industry with its wide variety of company size and industry segments, not providing information and services being specific enough to support MD / CXO needs (e.g. ASME, VDMA and several platforms)
- Several processes are complex and not yet professionalized, e.g. finding suitable partners for consultant services. That market as of today is still very untransparent and the level of quality of someone you haven’t worked with yet is mostly a big black box. You either feel lucky, having worked with someone suitable before or you know someone who has worked with someone in the past. Otherwise, it’s more like using google and relying on a very untransparent market of freelance services, increasing your stress level.
As a result, we frequently experience situation like the following:
- Annoyance and impatience as requests we get need 5h in 5 meetings instead of 5 min in 1 meeting for a task because of insufficient information base not being able to take decisions.
- Anger as we have to deal with unclear or even insufficient quality levels for costly services.
- Unhappiness as a result of not having access to information we like to have e.g. to initiate initiatives for further company development
- And many other similar situations
